How to Arrange Music ____Welcome to the guide on arranging music!I'll show you how I go about arranging music today.1.) Choose a song you like. It can be any song, really. For me, my mission statement is always to provide help and 'original' (in this case, music sheets) content. My first ever arrangement, Blu by Ryuichi Sakamoto, was created because I liked the orchestra version and I saw people who wanted the piano introduction. For this demo, I chose It Is Well by David Dunn.here is the full sheets to follow along Choose your instruments. This is the important part, because it defines what your arrangement will be like.

A marching band piece is usually very upbeat and complicated, because you will have to incorporate the many voices and rhythms in the song you're arranging. However, if you're making an arrangement for solo instruments or accompaniments, the job will be a little easier. Still, if the song you're arranging for solo instruments has percussion, you'll need to figure out how to make the instrument follow that drum line, too. If you can't do it or it doesn't sound right, just drop the percussion all together and just focus on the harmony and melody.I will use a FRENCH HORN* (edit) and piano accompaniment for this arrangement.3.) Analyze the music. This actually isn't as tedious as it sounds. Here's a checklist to help.☐ Check the BPM / Tempo.- Before you go typing out random numbers for the tempo, assess what kind of time signature you have. Tap your foot or march, count from 1 to 4 (or whichever is easiest), and see what it is. What beats does the song accent?- For this, I usually use I whip out my keyboard, tap my space bar, and use the average of 20 for my tempo. It Is Well turned out to be 4/4, 100 BPM for quarter notes.☐ Find the repeats in the song.Choruses tend to repeat and so do verses with a little bit of variation.

Rhythm usually repeats as well. Once you realize this, it'll be easier to copy and paste things later. It is Well:Chorus Repeats: 0:58, 2:05, 3:03, 3:23(check transition)Verse Repeats (Accompaniment): literally all of it☐ Find the chord progressions / chord names. You don't have to do this, but it makes things easier. I'm not good at this, so I probably wont do it.:')☐ Figure out if there's pick-up measures. Some songs have this.

It Is Well doesn't, but this one does: Find ALL sections of the song.Find the introduction, the verse, the chorus, post-chorus, and ending, or find the structure of the song.It Is Well structure:Introduction >> Verse 1 >> (not in control) >> Chorus >> Post-Chorus 1 >> Verse 2 >> >> Chorus >> Post-Chorus 2 (build up) >> Post-Chorus 1 >> Chorus >> Chorus >> Post-Chorus 1 >> Endingwill make sense later 4.) Pick a harmony or melody to focus on and sing it.Sing the notes that stand out the most. Then, put those notes in musescore and match them up. If you can't sing, then play the youtube video with the musescore audio.

Time it right.:')If you have a rhythmic section, tap it out on the desk, and then transfer it to Musescore. Play it over and over until it sounds right, and play it alongside the YouTube video to confirm it.If you can't figure out a harmony, or it goes by too fast, use YouTube's slow-down function in the settings.Usually I go for the high harmony (like right hand treble clef notes), then left hand bass notes, and finally the melody. IT'S OKAY TO BE UNSURE ABOUT PITCHES. After all, it's okay to add your little flare of style into the arrangement. It's okay to make mistakes, as long as it just sounds very close to the song or it fits.4.) After you get started, add in the key signature.Sometimes, the key signature isn't obvious.

Once you're into arranging the song, check the sharp or flat pattern. If the pattern doesn't make sense, like the only notes that are flat are G, A, and D, then you should change them to their en-harmonic (same pitch but written differently, Gb/F#) and see if it makes sense.BE CAREFUL not to confuse those patterns with accidentals. Look for trends, not to remedy all accidentals. It Is Well is in the key of A major.5.) Continue to do the parts individually, and take it SLOW.You don't have to arrange a song every night, although I should to get going on these request.Anyways, I suggest doing the harmony in another tab and melody somewhere else.
